White Rocks
Tumbling down the coastal slope on the seaward side of Malta’s Regional Road lie the ruins of the White Rocks complex. Originally built in the 1960’s by the British military as officer accommodation, when they were expelled in 1979 ownership passed to the government, who converted it into a holiday complex, which struggled financially for years, before being totally abandoned in 1995.
Since then, it has become a mecca for those looking to operate outside of polite society and has become a giant unofficial open-air canvas for paintings by local and international graffiti artists like Twitch, Meataxe, TelmoMiel, ChemiS and Sor2.
I was here in 2016 together with a good friend, art lover and local explorer, to document the artwork of this amazing place before it disappears for ever - weathering, vandalism and the ever-present threat of redevelopment mean that that in a few years it will almost certainly be gone.
